Perched high above the neighboring village of Casteil (10 minutes by car, 20 by foot), the 11th century Benedictine abbey is on the pilgrims‘ route Santiago de Compostela. Hike up 40 minutes from Casteil or take a village jeep "taxi;" no private cars. The abbey offers guided tours and astounding views.
A 5 minute bus ride from Vernet les Bains, this 11th century city, walled in the 17th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lively cafes, restaurants, and lots of shops. The Liberia Fortress with its 1000 steps is perched above the village. You will want to take the Yellow Train from here that winds through the mountains.
